Sandals, Royal Caribbean

Sandals, Royal Caribbean

I remember the day I met my husband—we were the only two single people at my friend Betsy’s wedding. We danced, drank and talked all night. That was 1982. We remained inseparable and Tommy proposed in 1983. Like most couples, we bought a house, raised a family and worked hard in our careers. Over the last few years, I felt like my husband and I fell out of love. We seemed to be on different schedules, sleeping and eating at the opposite times and really never talking. When I realized that our Silver Anniversary was upon us, I knew I had to rekindle the love we had for each other all those years ago. It seemed the only way to save our marriage. Although the 25th anniversary is supposed to be sterling silver, I went for the gold and booked a Sandals Royal Caribbean vacation package in Jamaica.

The minute we arrived, I couldn’t believe my eyes—we were on a private island! They even had swim-up river to your suite rooms. I booked us the Honeymoon Concierge Beachfront Walk-Out Room—it was a plantation-style room right on the beach. Every morning that’s how we started and ended our days on this resort island, taking a walk together on the beach gazing at the crystal clear water. I think these walks were one of the ways we really connected.

A couple of days into the trip, we were dining at this very romantic restaurant, La Jardinier, on the beach by candlelight, and I noticed that Tommy and I were gazing into each others’ eyes again, just like when we first met. This beautiful island allowed us to recapture our love.

Most of our vacation was spent relaxing on the beach and alone time in our luxurious suite. We were able to leave work and the city life behind us, including our cell phones and laptops, and really enjoy resort living. We each decided to pick an adventure we had never tried and do it together. I picked snorkeling, because I love the ocean and aquatic life—the fishes were amazing and my favorites were the black ones with blue lips. Tommy chose sailboating and I was happy to let him be the captain for an afternoon. The waters were calm and tranquil and we basked in the sun. It was truly one of the highpoints of our vacation. And even though, we could visit the other resorts on the other islands, we decided to stay on our own private island. Nightime was very exciting—every evening had a different event including a Carnival celebration, Reggae night, talent shows and live shows.

On one of our last nights, Tommy got down on one knee and asked me to marry him again. Of course, I said yes. The next day we got married on the beach at dusk wearing our swimsuits and flowers—two members of the hotel staff were our witnesses. What I hoped would be a last ditch to save our marriage ended up being the vacation of a lifetime. I can’t recommend Sandals enough!
